Oriental white stork has been listed as a national protected species since 1956. They once inhabited in Japan and Korea but went extinct in Japan in 1971. City of Toyooka has a program to reintroduce oriental white storks into their former inhabitant by captive breeding. The first trial to reintroduce oriental white storks is expected to be done in autumn 2005.
