In 1949, the week of Sept. 20 to 26 each year was designated as "Be Kind to Animals Week" in order to enhance public interest and understanding regarding the humane treatment and proper care of animals.To commemorate its 60th anniversary of the establishment, stamps depicting dogs and cats, chosen by public advertisement, were issued.
