(Small Notes for the Issue)

Kouyasan is the general name for the Buddhist monastic complex, which stretches east to west for 6 kilometers while its width is only 3 kilometers. It belongs to the Shingon sect with Kongobuji as its center, which was established by Kukai, the founder of the sect, in the 9th century. Kongara-douji, one of the protectors of the Buddhism, was made by Unkei (?-1223), a prominent sculptor of Buddhist images in the early Kamakura period.
